Pesadelos 1 (Nightmares) was commissioned in 2022 by Margaret McGillivray as part of her ANTHOLOGY OF SOLOS FOR THE STUDENT HORN PLAYER.  It is also included in Margaret's collection, LIFT: Solos for Horn by Black Composers. 

The work and the melodic materials within started as part of an art song cycle. The inspiration was Robert Frost’s poem, Fire and Ice.  A powerful meditation on the destructive forces of desire and hatred. Frost explores two apocalyptic scenarios—one where the world ends in fire, symbolizing passion and desire, and another in ice, representing hatred and indifference. He suggests that both emotions are potent enough to bring about destruction, and ultimately, he finds either outcome plausible.  Making for amazing source material for a musical nightmare!
